Donorschoose

This school year, I want to make sure your children have the materials they need to succeed. So I've created a classroom project request on a 501(c)3 charity website called DonorsChoose.org.

November is the Tell-A-Friend Challenge, so I am writing in hopes of any donations for our class! For this month only, your donation of $25 or more to my Teacher Page will not only help fund our project, but will also earn our class a raffle entry to win additional resources and supplies. You can help our class twice with one tax-deductible donation, and you'll hear back from our class about your impact on our learning!

To learn more or donate, visit my Teacher Page at http://www.donorschoose.org/nicoleheinlein

Please feel free to send me any questions you may have, and know that your children and I greatly appreciate your support.

Mahalo!

Book Character Day!

October 31st will be Book Character Day at Lanai Elementary!

What does that mean?  It means that on October 31st, each student will dress as their favorite book character.  So, over fall break, I would like you to help your child think of ideas of book characters they could dress up as and start to make a plan for a homemade costume.  I do not want you to buy a costume.  Try to find hats, clothes, and props that your child can use to portray their character.  They also need to bring the book to school, so go request it from the library, order it on Amazon, or go to Maui and search Barnes and Noble.  I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

If you lost your homework and newsletter about Book Character Day, here is an electronic copy.  Just click the picture, then press File, and Download to your computer.

Here are some ideas for costumes:

Have a fun and safe fall break!

Tiny Topics

Writers at work!
Our class has been learning that you can get ideas for writing from anywhere!  We learned you can get them from:
  • things you see
  • things you hear
  • books
  • songs
  • newspapers
  • paintings
  • conversations
To help us gather all of these ideas, we made Tiny Topics notebooks that we are keeping at school.  I encourage you all to make one at home, too!  It just takes 2 pieces of paper, scissors, and a stapler.  First, print this Tiny Topics page.  Put a blank piece of computer paper behind it and cut both pages on the lines.  Gather the little pages and put a staple in the top corner.

Better yet, use a real, spiral bound notepad!  You can find these at many grocery or office supply stores.

Happy Writing!

Fun Events!

We had so much fun this week with Chance to Dance from the Maui Dance Council!  Thank you Auntie Maggie for teaching us all about the plant and butterfly lifecycle through dance!

Also, several of our friends performed for the new principal, Mr. Elton Kinoshita, last night at the Pulama Lanai reception.  The dancers were beautiful!

Hope to see you all at the parade tomorrow morning!

Inside Recess Just Got More Fun!

Thanks to the generous people at Tri Lanai, 2nd grade now has 2 different DVDs to use during inside recess!  Adventure to Fitness also has free videos to watch on their website, but because of unstable internet at school, the videos take too long to load.  Now we have the DVDs and can watch them whenever we want!  They are fun videos that get our heart rates up while we learn fun and interesting facts about history and science!

Check out their website at home, too! Adventure to Fitness

Donorschoose

We have a new Donorschoose project for the end of the year!  It is a set of geometry and fraction activities for math!  We are loving our math centers and partner work and need more activities to help us learn all the content!

For the next 7 days, if you use the code INSPIRE, the Donorschoose Board of Directors will match your donation, helping our project get funded even faster!

You can check out the project {here} or click the picture below.  I would really appreciate it if you could share our link on your Facebook pages or email to friends and family.  The quicker we get this funded, the faster we get to use the materials! :)

Handwriting

Are you worried about your child's handwriting?  I found an excellent article that describes why handwriting is still important, even in this digital age: Education World.  There are also tons of tips and lessons for helping your child learn the proper formation of letters.

Hawaii Content & Performance standard 2.4.6 addresses handwriting: Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately.

This is why we continue to practice handwriting in 2nd grade.
