Rocks & Minerals

We have been working towards science standard 2.8.1 Earth Materials: Identify different Earth materials and classify them by their physical properties.

The kids looked through a shoebox full of different rocks I collected from the beach and from other areas of Lanai.  I then added in a collection of crystals and some other Earth Materials (driftwood, kukui nuts, coral, and others).

They then sorted everything into categories that made sense to them.  They had to name their category and explain/justify it, as well.

Here is a collection of pumice - a volcanic, igneous rock.

We even found books at the library on rocks and crystals!

Valentine's Day fun!

For Valentine's Day, we did an I Love Reading Read-a-thon! We wore jammies, brought blankets, pillows, snacks, and of course - books!  We had a blast!

We also wrote nice notes to everyone in the class.  We put our desks in a big circle, then wrote notes like musical chairs.

Here we are reading our notes.  Talk about filling buckets! Everyone was feeling so good reading all the nice things their classmates said about them!
